SHIELD-GH

About us

Our story, vision, and values

SHIELD-Ghana exists to ensure no tertiary student in Ghana is held back by an unrecognised or unsupported learning disability.

Our story

SHIELD-Ghana was founded by educators, researchers, and advocates who saw too many talented tertiary students struggle silently with undiagnosed Specific Learning Disabilities. We believe that with the right awareness, screening, and support, every student can thrive.

From small campus workshops we have grown into a national initiative working alongside universities, government, and international partners to reshape inclusive higher education in Ghana.

The challenge

Specific Learning Disabilities — including dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia — affect a significant portion of learners worldwide. In Ghana, awareness and structured support at the tertiary level remain limited. Many students reach university without ever being identified, leading to academic underperformance, low confidence, and high drop-out risk.

Dyslexia

Affects reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension.

Dyscalculia

Impacts understanding of numbers and mathematical reasoning.

Dysgraphia

Affects written expression, handwriting, and spelling.

Our Vision

"A Ghana where every student with a learning disability is seen, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential in higher education and beyond."

Our Mission

"To promote awareness, facilitate early diagnosis, and provide comprehensive support systems for tertiary students with specific learning disabilities in Ghana through advocacy, empowerment programs, and evidence-based research aimed at building inclusive and equitable higher education environments."

What we stand for

Core values that guide every decision

Five principles shape how we work with students, partners, and the wider community — from the smallest interaction to national policy advocacy.

  • Inclusion

Every learner belongs in higher education — without exception or condition.

  • Empathy

We listen first and lead with care, meeting students where they are.

  • Evidence-based action

Decisions are guided by rigorous research, data, and lived experience.

  • Collaboration

Stronger together — we partner with universities, government, and peers.

  • Empowerment

We equip students with the tools to own their journey and lead change.
