What is an SLD?
Specific Learning Disabilities (SLDs) are neurological differences that affect how the brain processes information. SHIELD-Ghana focuses on three: dyslexia (reading), dyscalculia (numbers), and dysgraphia (writing). They are not related to intelligence — many SLD students are highly capable when given the right tools.
Common signs
- Reading is significantly slower or more effortful than peers
- Difficulty understanding numbers or basic mathematical concepts
- Handwriting is inconsistent, hard to read, or written expression is laboured
- Spelling errors that don't match the student's overall ability
- Avoidance of reading- or writing-heavy tasks
- Strong verbal ability but weaker performance in written assessments
