What is an SLD?

Specific Learning Disabilities (SLDs) are neurological differences that affect how the brain processes information. SHIELD-Ghana focuses on three: dyslexia (reading), dyscalculia (numbers), and dysgraphia (writing). They are not related to intelligence — many SLD students are highly capable when given the right tools.

Common signs

  • Reading is significantly slower or more effortful than peers
  • Difficulty understanding numbers or basic mathematical concepts
  • Handwriting is inconsistent, hard to read, or written expression is laboured
  • Spelling errors that don't match the student's overall ability
  • Avoidance of reading- or writing-heavy tasks
  • Strong verbal ability but weaker performance in written assessments
